I used the website Surveymonkey.com to collect some information around the topic of music magazines with the aim to find out more about the audience I was creating my magazine for. Here are some general statistics I found through this (I had exactly half of my results from women, and the other half from men, all aging from 15 to 18.):
- When asked a multiple answer question as to what genre they listen to, the two most popular answers were alternative rock and Indie with 42% of participants highlighting these options.
- When asked which title best suited an indie rock magazine, and given a selection of ideas I has created myself 42% selected "Skadoosh" which was the most popular, followed by "Alternate" at 27%.
- The most popularly read magazine by my participants was "NME" at 32% and many chose the "other" option and selected other magazines, not many of which were repeated.
- 54% of my participants would prefer a weekly magazine over a monthly magazine.
- The most popular colour scheme was "Red, Black and White"
By doing this I can now start to create my magazine how my target audience want it to be, and thus creating a good magazine for my audience. I already understand the typical conventions within music magazines, and now with this combination I can start to create my first draft magazines. The questionnaire has helped me decide my colour scheme, title and the genre of my magazine, as well as what content to include due to audience restrictions.
Y U NO WORK!?
